Silver Gate Yacht Club

Welcome to Silver Gate Yacht Club TMDL Page

Copper in the water column of shelter Island is exceeding the US government standards and must be reduced to within acceptable limits. This process is involving many organizations and the yacht clubs within the basin to develop a viable plan to meet the mandated copper levels.

Copper comes from many sources but the primary source is the basin is viewed as copper based bottom paint. Why there are many different view points of where all the copper is coming from , the one point is we must reduce its level in the shelter island basin.

The silver gate dock rules require that you provide the port captain whit the kind and copper content and date you had bottom paint applied to your vessel. Like wise if you had a non copper base bottom paint applied the port captain also needs this information.

SGYC Dock rule D15 Anti-Fouling Bottom Paint

Each time a member has “bottom paint” applied to his/her vessel, the member shall supply the office with documentation that describes the manufacturer and type of bottom paint that was applied to said vessel. This document shall be placed in the member’s file and a separate Water Quality File shall be maintained by the Port Captain.

Currently the Port of San Diego is conducting test of alternative bottom paints that will limit or control marine growth. The below are links for more information on this vital subject.
