Welcome to Silver Gate Yacht Club Junior Sailing
This program is designed for junior sailors
aged 8 to 18 to learn the essentials of sailing, to learn sportsmanship
and responsibility, and to provide a sense of adventure and
accomplishment.
The program is supported by the Silver Gate Junior Sailing Foundation,
a 501 ©3 non-profit organization. The Program includes a full day summer program
and a continuing year-round follow up. In addition students who become yearly
junior members of SGYC can participate in the club activities such as the Wheel
Chair Regatta and Opening Day.
Summer Sailing
Instruction Program
Full-day, summer instruction is offered each year in June and July. The
yearly schedule and costs and enrollment documents can be found on this SGYC web
site under "Junior Sailing", "forms".
A description of the junior program is contained below.
ALL applicants, regardless of sailing skill level will be admitted,
space permitting, during the summer program. Normally new students must register
for weeks 1 and 2. We anticipate that by the third week of instruction the new
junior will have advanced enough to engage in either racing instruction or
solo-navigation instruction under the supervision of the on-the-water
instructors.
SGYC Junior Sailing Program has several safety boats. A sufficient
number will be provided for the safety for all students, when the students are
on the water.
The instructor will assess all juniors for their level of sailing.
Students must be able to meet established criteria prior to acceptance into
intermediate or advanced classes.
The Curriculum
The summer program includes class time to learn basic sailing skills,
navigation, and seamanship, as well as basic boat handling for beginners and
navigation and racing for advanced juniors.
All Silver Gate instructors are certified. All instructors have also
completed a background check.
